William John Hennessy
A Kilkenny-born artist, Hennessy moved to New York in his youth when his father was forced to leave Ireland as a result of his involvement in the Young Ireland movement. Hennessy gained admission to the National Academy of Design and exhibited his first works there. He was skilled as a wood-engraver and his designs were used to illustrate many publications. In 1870 he moved to London and became a member of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters in 1902. He exhibited eight works at the RHA during his career. www.whytes.ie
