Anthony Carey Stannus
Anthony Carey Stannus was born in Carrickfergus, Co. Antrim. He entered the Government School of Design, Belfast in 1850 and later attended the Training School for Masters in London. He worked as an Art Master in a school in Dowlais, Wales which was known for its large Irish population. During his career Stannus executed a number of commissions for the local history department at the Ulster Museum. He exhibited widely with the Royal Scottish Society, the Belfast Fine Art Society and the RHA among others. He also travelled widely and was appointed correspondent for the Illustrated London News while in Mexico in 1866. Much of Stannus work was engraved and published and can be found in collections such as The Ulster Museum and the Victoria and Albert, London.
