Irish & International Art
2 December 2024 Whyte’s Irish & International Art auction on Monday 2 December grossed over €1.2 million. An outstanding painting by Paul Henry demonstrated his amazing artistic talent and rightfully claimed top hammer price of €210,000 (lot 27, KILLARY BAY, CONNEMARA, c.1910-15). Jack Butler Yeats THE DUST ON THY CHARIOT WHEEL, 1945 attracted a winning bid of €160,000, and James Osborne (1940-1992) THE RACE, 1992 went for €6,800 to a collector with a keen interest in sculpture.
Other notable results include Letitia Marion Hamilton RHA (1878-1964) RAINBOW AND COTTAGES, which fetched €3,400 (estimate €1,500-€2,000), William Crozier HRHA (1930-2011) STILL LIFE WITH PLANT AND BOUQUET with a sale price of €14,000 (estimate €8,000-€12,000), while John Butler Yeats RHA (1839-1922) SELF PORTRAIT achieved a result of €1,250 (estimate €600-€800).

30 September 2024 Whyte’s Important Irish Art auction on Monday 30 September grossed over €1.3 million. An outstanding painting by Jack Yeats created in his 85th year demonstrated his amazing artistic talent and rightfully claimed top hammer price of €210,000 (lot 30, Top Of The Tide). Paul Henry’s STONY FIELDS OF KERRY attracted a winning bid of €180,000, and Leo Whelan’s portrait of Michael Collins went for €60,000 to a collector with a keen interest in Irish history.
Other notable results include Nano Reid (1900-1981) MEGALITHIC TOMB, which fetched €10,500 (estimate €6,000-€8,000), Grace Henry HRHA (1868-1953) COTTAGES, ACHILL with a sale price of €13,000 (estimate €8,000-€12,000), while Patrick Hennessy RHA (1915-1980) LADY URSULA VERNON, AT BRUREE HOUSE, COUNTY LIMERICK achieved a result of €20,000 (estimate €8,000-€12,000).

Important Irish Art
27 May 2024 Whyte’s Important Irish Art auction on Monday 27 May grossed over €2 million. Large oil paintings got the best prices: Jack Yeats’ 1952 Discovery grossed €473,000 and Paul Henry’s 1916 A Village in the West made €348,000 including buyers’ commission. Whyte’s auction results in the first half of 2024 confirm the continuing demand for Irish art of quality and value, and Whyte’s position as foremost in the Irish art market.
Mary Swanzy HRHA (1882-1978) IN THE WINDOW, 1920s sold for €90,000 (estimate €60,000-€80,000), Sir John Lavery RA RSA RHA (1856-1941) MISS ALICE FULTON AT PAISLEY LAWN TENNIS CLUB, 1889 fetched €95,000 (estimate €60,000-€80,000), William John Leech RHA ROI (1881-1968) THE PLACE, CONCARNEAU, MORNING reached a sale price of €20,000 (estimate €4,000-€6,000), while William Conor OBE RHA RUA ROI (1881-1968) THE WHIRL OF THE DANCE achieved a result of €42,000 (estimate €20,000-€30,000).

Frank McKelvey RHA RUA (1895-1974) FAIR DAY, ROUNDSTONE, COUNTY GALWAY c.1959 sold for €26,000 (estimate €15,000-€20,000), Grace Henry HRHA (1868-1953) LITTLE WAVES, ACHILL, 1915-19 fetched €30,000 (estimate €10,000-€15,000), Fortunino Matania (1881-1963) THE LAST GENERAL ABSOLUTION OF THE MUNSTERS AT RUE DU BOIS reached a sale price of €61,000 (estimate €30,000-€40,000), while Bridget Riley RA (b.1931) ECHO, 1998 achieved a result of €8,000 (estimate €3,000-€5,000).

The art has been generously donated by leading Irish artists. The entire proceeds of the auction, without deduction of costs, will go to Médecins Sans Frontières, Doctors Without Borders who are working on the ground in Gaza.
