Important Irish Art
1 December 2025 Whyte’s Important Irish Art sale on 1 December demonstrated a continuing strong demand for art of quality. The top hammer price of €235,000 (€292,810 including Buyers Premium and VAT) was for Paul Henry RHA (1876-1958) The Great Sugar Loaf, County Wicklow, c.1929-30, with a presale estimate of €100,000 to €150,000.
Other notable results were John Luke RUA (1906-1975) Shaw's Bridge, Belfast, 1933 at €48,000, Frank McKelvey RHA RUA (1895-1974) Woman Feeding Hens, 1921 at €30,000, and Rowan Gillespie (b.1953) Imagine [The Frailest Reed], 2006.

Irish & International Art
29 September 2025 Whyte’s auction demonstrated the continuing confidence in the market for Irish works of rarity and quality, with a sale total of €1 million gross including Buyers’ Premium. The top prices were €90,000 apiece for Paul Henry’s In Connemara and Louis le Brocquy’s Image of Samuel Beckett, with Sir William Orpen’s Portrait of Ferris Bligh St. George making €60,000 hammer price.
Remarkable results included: An oil on canvas by Graham Knuttel, Cutting A Deal estimated at €6,000 to €8,000 sold for a hammer price of €12,000.
Daniel O'Neill (1920-1974) Girl in a Headscarf, estimate €15,000 to €20,000 sold for €20,000. John Behan's bronze sculpture, Seven Boyne Valley Warriors sold for €11,500.
There was great interest in all the Ciaran Clear lots, with The Road Home, estimated €4,000 to €6,000 selling for €6,300. A Percy French set of 9 Landscapes sold for it’s top estimate of €10,000.

Irish & International Art
26 May 2025 Whyte’s auction demonstrated the continuing confidence in the market for Irish works of rarity and quality. An outstanding painting by Mainie Jellett, Achill Horses, 1933 claimed top hammer price of €210,000.
Paul Henry’s West of Ireland Bog sold for €125,000, while Anglesea Market, Dublin, 1933 by Harry Kernoff was hammered for its top estimate of €40,000.
William John Leech’s Gardeners Joy nearly doubled its lower estimate of €15,000 to sell at €28,000, and a Louis le Brocquy watercolour Image of Francis Bacon, 1980, made double its lower estimate of €12,000.
Other remarkable results included: Evie Hone watercolour Abstract Composition estimated €2,000 to €3,000 which made €5,400, Charles Vincent Lamb oil West of Ireland Landscape, estimate €1,500 to €2,000 which sold for €3,600, Bridget Riley Magenta And Blue, 2002 lithograph, estimate €8,000 to €12,000 took €14,500.

ECLECTIC COLLECTOR
6 April 2025 A fascinating array of historical artefacts, manuscripts, documents, photographs, books, militaria and medals, weapons, memorabilia including advertising, sport and entertainment, coins, banknotes and other collectibles. 480+ lots.
Worthy of note is a gun with which an Irish Volunteer in Tullamore fired the first shot of 1916 [lot 163, estimate €8,000 to €10,000]. A 1921 Agreement on the Treaty signed by Eamon de Valera and Michael Collins is a unique and extremely important document [lot 193]. An archive of about four hours film of Ireland features the War of Independence and 1916 Rising. Also notable is a fascinating letter from Liam Lynch in the Four Courts to his godmother in County Limerick. An archive of an Irishman who fought for Franco in the Spanish Civil War includes his diary, uniform and medals [lot 44, €3,000 to €5,000].

An outstanding painting by Paul Henry demonstrated his amazing artistic talent and rightfully claimed top hammer price of €270,000 (lot 20 Paul Henry RHA (1876-1958) LAKE AND MOUNTAINS IN CONNEMARA, 1933-6). Colin Middleton SLIGO LANDSCAPE, 1940 attracted a winning bid of €21,000 (estimate €14,000-€18,000), and Mary Swanzy HRHA (1882-1978) LA ROUTE went for €36,000 against a pre-sale estimate of €20,000-€30,000.
Other notable results include Jack Butler Yeats RHA (1871-1957) MEXICAN NOON and MEXICAN JOE, c.1901, which fetched €10,000 (estimate €6,000-€8,000), Albert Lynch (Prussian/French, 1851-1912) LA JOLIE FILLE [THE PRETTY GIRL] with a sale price of €11,500 (estimate €3,000-€5,000), while Liam O'Neill (b.1954) BRINGING HOME THE TURF achieved a result of €26,000 (estimate €12,000-€18,000).

Important Irish Art
27 May 2024 Whyte’s Important Irish Art auction on Monday 27 May grossed over €2 million. Large oil paintings got the best prices: Jack Yeats’ 1952 Discovery grossed €473,000 and Paul Henry’s 1916 A Village in the West made €348,000 including buyers’ commission. Whyte’s auction results in the first half of 2024 confirm the continuing demand for Irish art of quality and value, and Whyte’s position as foremost in the Irish art market.
Mary Swanzy HRHA (1882-1978) IN THE WINDOW, 1920s sold for €90,000 (estimate €60,000-€80,000), Sir John Lavery RA RSA RHA (1856-1941) MISS ALICE FULTON AT PAISLEY LAWN TENNIS CLUB, 1889 fetched €95,000 (estimate €60,000-€80,000), William John Leech RHA ROI (1881-1968) THE PLACE, CONCARNEAU, MORNING reached a sale price of €20,000 (estimate €4,000-€6,000), while William Conor OBE RHA RUA ROI (1881-1968) THE WHIRL OF THE DANCE achieved a result of €42,000 (estimate €20,000-€30,000).
