Derek Clarke
Born at Longthorpe, Peterborough, Derek Clarke studied at the Slade School of Art. He lived in the West of Ireland both before and after the Second World War where, inspired by the landscape and people of Connemara, he produced a significant amount of work. Derek Clarke taught at Edinburgh College of Art between 1947 and 1978, supplementing his income by painting portraits. A retrospective of his work was held at the Royal Scottish Academy in 2013. He was still painting up to his death in 2014 at the age of 101. www.whytes.ie
