Marc Chagall was a major figure of Modernist art. He was born Moishe Shagall in a Lithuanian Jewish Hassidic family in Liozna, near the city of Vitebsk, Belarus, which was then part of the Russian Empire. Chagall was a painter, illustrator, stain glass designer, set and costume designer, ceramicist and sculptor. At close hand, he lived through pogroms, the Russian revolution and it's aftermath and the Nazi occupation of France. www.whytes.ie He exhibited to great acclaim in Berlin, St. Petersburg, Moscow, Paris and New York, winning these centres of culture over to his idiosyncratic style which variously combined aspects of Fauvism, Cubism and Symbolism with his personal symbolic language and figurative poetry. Religious imagery was important for him and he completed major works based on the stories of the Bible. His works adorn major cultural and religious institutions from Chicago to Jerusalem and are held in Major public and private collections the world over. www.whytes.ie
