Micheal Farrell
Born in Kells, Co. Meath in 1940, Micheal Farrell attended St. Martin's School of Art from 1956 to 1960 where he obtained his National Diploma in Drawing and Painting. He lived mainly in England and France for the remainder of his life, though Irish history, identity and current affairs continued to drive his work. He produced paintings, drawing and print, with multiple techniques and literary and comic allusions. www.whytes.ie He won many international awards in his career including the MacAuley Fellowship in 1996 as well as the Biennale des Jeunes award in Paris. He exhibited widely in the Armidal Regional Art Gallery, NSW, Australia; C.T.T., Brussels, 1987; Robin Gibson Gallery, Sydney, 1993 as well as with the Dawson and then Taylor galleries in Dublin. A retrospective of his work (1953 - 1978) was held at the Douglas Hyde Gallery in Dublin in 1979. Farrell was elected a member of Aosdαna in 1987. In the later years of his career Joyce was a constant theme of his work. Farrell died in France in 2000 after a long battle with cancer. www.whytes.ie
