Oisín Kelly
Born in Dublin, Oisin Kelly was a sculptor having worked for numerous public and private projects and commissions throughout Ireland. In 1966, he became an artist in residence at the Kilkenny Design Centre after teaching at the St Columba’s College, Dublin for 20 years. In the meantime, he had studied sculpture under British artist Henry Moore at Chelsea Polytechnic, London for a year. Kelly’s works were regularly exhibited in the Irish Exhibition of Living Art and the RHA of which he became a full member in 1965. He also took part in 1971 ROSC Irish Imagination exhibition. Initially working with wood for religious subjects, Kelly progressively diversified his technique and interests and worked with bronze, copper and stone, showcasing a few examples at the Oireachtas exhibition with his friend Evie Hone. Kelly’s preference for commissions resulted in the absence of solo shows and exhibitions, although a large retrospective of his work was held in 1978. His sculptures are part of Ireland’s urban landscapes, one of many examples being the Children of Lir sculpture located in the Garden of Remembrance, Parnell Square, Dublin.
