Patrick Collins

Patrick Collins was born in Dromore West, Co. Sligo. After his father died from tuberculosis, the family moved to Sligo where his mother ran a small grocery shop. From his youth Collins possessed an absorbing interest in wild-life and would often explore the Sligo countryside. He was sent to boarding-school in Dublin and afterwards found employment in an insurance company, where he worked for about twenty years. In his spare time Collins read extensively and would play rugby each Saturday with the Clontarf Rugby Club. He did not begin to paint until his late twenties. www.whytes.ie He began to attend evening-classes at the National College of Art and attended the life-classes of George Collie. In the mid 1940s he left his job and went to live in a tower in Howth Castle. Whilst there he immersed himself in painting and the tower became a gathering place for writers and artists. In 1950 he began exhibiting in the Irish Exhibition of Living Art and continued to do so for the next twenty years. In 1956 he held his first solo exhibition at the Ritchie Hendriks Gallery, Dublin. Collins’ work was included in many important group exhibitions during his career, notably the Art Council’s modern Irish painting selection which began its European tour in 1969. In 1971 the artist moved to Paris with almost disastrous consequences. In the two years he spent in the city Collins resided at nine different addresses and sometimes lived at a point of near starvation. He left Paris to live in Normandy and then Nice, before returning to Ireland in 1979. In 1980 he was elected HRHA and in the following year he became a member of Aosdana. A retrospective of Collins’ work was held in the Sligo Art Gallery in 1985. In the late 1980s he received an honorary degree from Trinity College Dublin and was elected Saoi by his fellow Aosdana members. He died at his home in Monkstown in 1994. Works by the artist can be seen in collections throughout Ireland, including the Ulster Museum, National Gallery of Ireland and Crawford Municipal Art Gallery. www.whytes.ie
