Simon Coleman was born in Duleek, Co. Meath and trained at the Dublin Metropolitan School under Maurice MacGonigal and Seαn Keating. He was a member of the Royal Hibernian Academy, and was influenced by Maurice MacGonigal, the Academy's President, and professor at The National College of Art, who himself was influenced by Seαn Keating. www.whytes.ie Simon Coleman received many prestigious commissions, including his famous painting depicting President Hyde's First Meeting of the Council of State, which hangs in University College Dublin. Coleman is best known for his landscapes, particularly of his native county, but he also produced numerous portraits, including a self-portrait. After a number of years living and working in Dublin, he returned to live in Duleek and taught art in the Drogheda Technical School. He also worked for the Folklore Commission as a collector of folklore and several of his paintings depict scenes from Irish fables. www.whytes.ie
