Sir Robert Ponsonby Staples
Born in Dundee, Staples studied art and architecture from the age of twelve, first at the Catholic University of Leuven in Belgium, later at Dresden, Paris and London. The Royal Academy accepted his first painting in 1875 at the age of 22, Staples exhibited with the RA regularly as well as producing portraits of important politicians, actors, churchmen, artists, and monarchy in England. His most famous painting is The Ideal Cricket Match, which now hangs in the Pavilion at Lords Cricket Ground, with other works of note being Cardinal Mannings Last Reception and Gladstone Introducing the Home Rule Bill. Staples played an increasing part in the running of the family estate in Lissan, Cookstown in 1905, taking up residence there in 1912, where he succeeded to the property and the baronetcy on the death of his elder brother in 1933.
