Stephen Catterson-Smith
Stephen Catterson-Smith was an English portrait painter. He studied at the schools of the Royal Academy and later in Paris. He became known in London for black chalk portraits. He moved to Ireland in 1840, staying in Derry and then Dublin, having been commisioned to paint portraits here. He became the eminent portraitist of the day in Dublin. He served as the President of the Royal Hibernian Academy and the Director of the National Gallery of Ireland. His sons Robert and Stephen Junior became professional artists in their own right. www.whytes.ie
