Thomas Ryan
Born in Limerick in 1929, Thomas Ryan studied at the Limerick College of Art and the National College of Art and Design, Dublin where he met leading artists Seαn Keating and Maurice MacGonigal. He started to show his works at the Royal Hibernian Academy in 1957 and was elected president in 1982 until 1992. Amongst other titles, Thomas Ryan was also an Honorary Member of the Royal Academy, London and Royal Scottish Academy, Edinburgh and was appointed Governor of the National Gallery of Ireland between 1979 and 1982. He received numerous commissions including the design of the first Irish one-pound coin in 1990 and the Dublin Millennium 50p piece, issued in 1988. Working with different mediums, Thomas Ryan demonstrated a productive and highly skilled palette of works. A renowned portraitist, his sitters included Seαn Keating, Ιamon de Valera, Sinιad OConnor and Ronnie Delaney among others. In 1966, he painted GPO 1916 to commemorate the 50 years anniversary of the Rising and is today regarded as an important illustration of Irish history. (whytes.ie)
