Thurloe Conolly

Register for Updates Request a Valuation
Thurloe Conolly was born in Cork and worked in an office from leaving school until 1941, spending his spare time painting and writing poetry. Thurloe’s father introduced him to drawing techniques used in engineering and architecture as a child, an influence which was apparent in his works throughout his career. Once he began painting full time his work was exhibited widely: in 1943 at the IELA, at the 1944 Exhibition of Subjective Art in Dublin, and in 1945 at the first show in the Dublin Painters Gallery. www.whytes.ie He had a one man show at Victor Waddington’s Gallery in 1949, and a series of exhibitions in America including Boston and New York, as well as in England, Holland and Sweden. He was a prominent member of the White Stag group of artists who invigorated the Dublin art scene in the 1940s. In 1967 Conolly moved to France, setting up his own architectural and design practice near Bordeaux, before retiring to paint full-time in 1995. Interest in his work in Ireland was rekindled by the inclusion of early paintings, photo-montages and “Surrealoids” in the exhibition Language of Dreams at the Crawford Art Gallery 2015/2016 , and the CIT Wandesford Quay Gallery solo show of Conolly's more recent abstract works from the same period. www.whytes.ie
